"But the direction was really specific--something like, A colorful painting of a beach with palm trees wrapped in crocheted sleeves in these specific colors. I do think it's the first time I used gouache, because I wanted to get as bright and vibrant colors as possible.
They were fun to do, because I am always up for the challenge of figuring out how I want to paint or draw something new, and I don't think I'd really done palm trees or sand or the ocean in any kind of close up way before this? That might not be totally true. But I really do sometimes like to just be told exactly what's wanted. I think the hardest part for me is coming up with ideas, ha, so it's kind of nice when somebody is like, here's some money and I'll tell you exactly what I want you to draw.
I actually never saw anything either of them were used for, but my understanding was that they were for postcards and various brochures and some web stuff.
Phish asked me to do the paintings and obviously Dan did the type. I think there was a little more back and forth for him, but for me it was very much, Here is what we want you to do, I did it, and it was done." - JS
