About this poster
This art print "This Yellow Brick Road Goes Nowhere..." by Jermaine Rogers gives us a pretty funny and twisted take on the classic Wizard of Oz story. The artwork shows Dorothy in her red shoes, the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion all looking completely beat and slumped on this worn-out red couch that's just sitting right on the yellow brick road. Above them, there's this bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds, which makes the whole exhausted vibe of the characters even more obvious.
This art print features a similar design as Rogers' Band of Horses Denver 2010 poster, showing how he likes to reuse and adapt his powerful imagery across different projects.
Rogers is basically calling out all the BS we get fed about following our dreams and finding easy answers to life's problems. As he puts it, "There are no magic roads that lead to 'everything you've always dreamed of.' There are no wizards with all of the answers that will make your life a success." He's saying real life is messy - it happens "off the road, out in the mud, and the weeds and the woods" where you actually have to work and think for yourself.
The best part of his message is the ending: if you do decide to follow one of those many "yellow-brick-roads" out there, make sure you bring a chair because "it gets tiring going in circles." The image totally nails this idea, showing our favorite Oz characters having figured this out the hard way.
