About this poster
On September 28th of 1968 Flatt & Scruggs with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, the Sons of Champlin and Country Weather played the second of three shows at the Avalon Ballroom, in San Francisco. This is the 139th image in the Family Dog series, known as “Holy City Service”. This design is credited to Wes Wilson, utilizing a photo by Jim Smircich of an abandoned gas station in California. The band and venue information is drawn at the bottom left of the art. It is Wes’s lettering, but not the psychedelic Roller-style lettering he used on the Bill Graham posters between BG-23 and BG-61. FD-139 was printed as a double postcard with FD-140, measuring 6 33/64 x 9 5/16”. It has Bob Schnepf’s groovy detailed Place Stamp Here drawing printed in black ink on the reverse. The poster and postcards for FD-139 were printed only once. FD-139 is described on page 195 of the King guide (12th ed). It is pictured in the Family Dog series on page 102 of the Art of Rock book.
