Gig Poster
Jack White N1 Multiple Cities 24 Jones
About this poster
Jack White posted an image that gave me a full-on haunt a few months ago.
It hit me like a pie in the face. A pie with filling made from weeping ghosts.
Initially it read to me as Jack himself done up as some arty Winston Smith sporting a rat-cage.
Nope. It’s a clown wearing an early 20th century “goggle eye” style catcher’s mask.
At one time, this fella was THE clown.
Frank “Slivers” Oakley, so named for his slender frame, profoundly inspired every clown that followed including Charlie Chaplin and Lou Jacobs.
For his profession, he attained unimaginable kite-ass heights.
His most famous routine, the one-man baseball game, led to the creation of the modern costumed team mascot.
Buster Keaton said of him, “Frank Oakley is so great that everyone in the world should think he’s the greatest thing that’s happening. If they don’t, they’re turds.”
He eventually went Sylvia’s way leaving behind a daughter and a meager stack of ephemera and photos.
No film of him really. Way after Frank’s death, Buster Keaton preserved the one-man baseball routine by performing it himself for the cameras in tribute.
I asked Jack if he had plans for the photo. He didn’t.
Now it’s the first poster off the ranks for a wild tour promoting “NO NAME”, a throughly wild album currently available only at these early shows.
Give it a Youtube spin if you want a jolt.
