"So there are a few techniques going on at once here. There is a little bit of cross hatching over some linear or volumetric hatch-marking. There is a very small amount of stipple or pointillism and there is some some contour shape making to suggest certain forms like the tree tops and certain foliage. Pen and ink is a kind of strict discipline on some levels. I like using multiple techniques. Some really disciplined pen artists will do whole pieces in only one approach like stipple or cross hatch, or only diagonal hatch marks. My favorite pen artists throughout history used multiple techniques but still stay "clean". Some great masters to look at are Gustave Dore , William Hogarth, Albrecht Durer, and modern artists like R. Crumb for a very accessible blend of cross hatching techniques, Jim Woodring for very strict yet playful linear techniques, and Charles Burns for deep black into fine volumetric modulation." - DW
