"In 1989 I lived in Boston and somehow I got a job teaching painting at a continuing education academy in Brookline. The director of the school asked me if I’d be willing to do a live painting in a public space. I was young and ambitious and I never said no in those days so the following week I set myself up in the public square they’d set aside for me. There was that weird moment of “ok what the hell am I gonna paint?” ... I had done some drawings of a sort of storybook landscape with a down the rabbit hole cast of characters so I made a fast decision to go in that direction. Musicians opening portals.... People gathered and watched. They came and went in clusters and I forged ahead. I didn’t work from a sketch or any reference. I forced myself to create stream of consciousness style on the spot because I thought it would be more entertaining for onlookers and would also force me to produce. I liked to freak myself out I guess. I sweated some bullets and then overcame my nerves. After the initial composition was in then the details were more painstaking and a little more boring to watch. Once my two week commitment was up I took the piece home and put it in storage for almost three decades. At the time I felt like it was more of an experience than a finished piece. Fast forward and around comes 2019 and I dusted it off and finished it. So it was a thirty year process with a perilous life lived in between rediscovering it.
